Race abuse probe at Alfreton Town FC

Police are investigating a complaint of racial abuse during an Alfreton Town match against Kidderminster Harriers.

Former Ilkeston Town striker Amari Morgan-Smith says he was targeted during the Blue Square Bet Premier fixture at Aggborough on Saturday February 23.

Health and safety director John Glasby, of Alfreton Town Football Club, said: “We would ask all supporters to refrain from commenting on the alleged racist issue at the recent match against Kidderminster. The club is having to reply to The Football Association which we are at present doing, and to apologise to both Kidderminster Harriers and the player involved.”

After the game, which Harriers won 3-1, Morgan-Smith, 23, tweeted: “So was racially abused today when will this stuff stop! A little downer after a good win.”

Wyre Forest District Inspector Paul Crowley said: “All such claims of racist abuse are taken very seriously and that is why we immediately launched an investigation after we became aware of the incident.”

Anyone with any information about the incident should contact PC Sian Stockton on 0300 3333000 (extension 3946).
