Quest for Kilburn crossing gathers support

CAMPAIGNERS fighting for road safety measures on a busy Kilburn road are hoping years of lobbying will finally pay off.

Highfield Road in Kilburn has become a well known danger spot in recent years, and last year it was the site of an accident, where a man was in collision with a car after picking his children up from school.

The parish council and the infant and junior schools have now asked a representative from Derbyshire County Council's highways department to come out and have a look at the site to determine if it would be possible to install a pedestrian crossing there.

Eric Hetherington, chairman of the Kilburn Parish Council, said: "We've got a nursery, an infant school and a junior school near that site and no crossing warden or anything.

"The traffic is horrendous.

"There are school zig-zags on one side and a bus stop on the other side of the road, but there is nowhere that the children can cross safely."

When the possibility of a crossing was first introduced in the village, residents on Highfield Road were opposed to it, as it would mean the loss of some parking on the busy road, which is the only place available for cars of residents who live in the terraced houses.

Cllr Hetherington said the householders had said they would support the crossing if it meant they did not lose parking spaces.

Kilburn Junior and Kilburn Infant School and Nursery have been strong supporters of the installation of a crossing at the bottom end of Highfield Road for years.

Joanne Baillie, headteacher at the infant school, said: "We have been wanting a crossing for years now. The road is very dangerous because of the amount of traffic.

"Often parents and carers park on the pavements and no stopping zones to pick up their children and you can't walk on the pavements. I suppose it's the same at a lot of schools. You take your life in your hands when you cross that road.

"If there was a crossing it would not only help the schools. There is sheltered accommodation near here and the older people would be able to use it as well."

It is hoped a representative from Derbyshire County Council will come out to look at the site later in the year.
