Police warning after man approaches schoolgirl

A warning has been issued after a 12-year-old schoolgirl was approached by a man who asked her if she wanted to get in his car.

The youngster was walking along Porterhouse Road in Ripley at about 6.30pm on Tuesday, July 13, a dark-coloured car pulled up beside her. The driver whistled at the girl and asked if she wanted to get in the car.

The frightened girl ran back to her friend’s house nearby.

A Derbyshire Police spokesman said: “We can confirm that a 12-year-old girl from Ripley has reported this incident to police. She ran back to her friends. She described the man as black, with stubble and a shaved head.

“This appears to be an isolated incident but we advise any children who are approached by a stranger to contact their parents or the police.”

In a letter to parents they said a man in a black car, with tinted windows and loud exhaust. approached a girl at about 6pm on the Porterhouse Estate near the park.

It added: “Please ask your child to be extra vigilant when out with friends. The police are aware of this incident.”

Carey Ayres, principal at The Ripley Academy, said: “We can confirm that police are investigating an incident involving one of our students. We have informed parents and students and are urging them to take extra care at this time.”
