Amber Valley Borough Council will fight plans to register land off Nottingham Road in Ripley as a ‘village green’, a committee has decided.

Amber Valley Borough Council will fight plans to register land off Nottingham Road in Ripley as a ‘village green’, a committee has decided.

The recreation and amenities committee, composed of Conservative councillors Stuart Bradford and Elizabeth Bowley, with Labour councillor Tony Holmes abstaining, granted chief executive Peter Carney the power to contest the application, made by Ripley Town Council.

Amber Valley has already hired Nottingham solicitors Geldards to fight the application at a cost of £12,680 and invested a ‘significant amount of officer time’ in gathering evidence against it. Committee vice-chairman Cllr Bradford said: “I really believe this application should be resisted because it will fetter the use of the existing facilities. Should the application be successful it means people can come and go at will on this land which has been managed for the benefit of local people for sport and recreation. It should be resisted.”
