New school on the way in Aldercar
NRHN 19-09-12 BE 2 Tony Cooper Head teacher Aldercar community language college.
Aldercar Community Language College is being knocked down and rebuilt in a project set to cost between £12m amd £14m.
The headteacher at the college Tony Cooper has desperately wanted buildings at the school replaced since he started in the job 18 years ago.
He says the current 1950s wooden-framed buildings at the Daltons Close school were not up to the job.
He said: “I’m absolutely delighted and all the staff are really pleased as well.
“There’s a real excitement that the new facilities are coming, which is just great,” he added.I have been working on this for nearly 18 years.
“I have pestering anybody who will listen to me about the state of these buildings.”
The state of the buildings are now said to be the worse of all secondary schools in Derbyshire.
As part of the scheme the all of the college will be knocked down and rebuilt – except the sixth form building which was new three years ago, the sports centre which was replaced last year and the languages block which was built in the 1970s so will just be refurbished during the development, he said.
The building work will take place in two phases, with the the first phase more than likely incorporating the technology and art rooms and science labs, Mr Cooper said.
The second phase of work will incorporate the humanities, maths and drama rooms, the main hall and dining room.
The county council as the education authority has invested £1.675m of unallocated funding in to the project to allow design work to begin.
The first phase is expected to cost around £6m and the second phase about £5m.Building work is due to start in 2013/14.
A council spokesman said: “The college has a number of structural condition-related issues and as it has not been approved in the Government’s Priority Schools Building Programme initiative we’re planning to replace it.”
