Money stolen from account

A Ripley man used a bank card stolen by a friend to raid the account of a pensioner who had helped him.

The victim aged 65, had previously given Matthew Meakin - the boyfriend of a friend’s daughter – a place to stay temporarily because he felt sorry for him.

During that time, Meakin, 31, had carried out some small errands for the OAP, who had mobility problems, Chesterfield magistrates heard.

The OAP’s home was subsequently burgled and among the goods stolen were his bank card, two mobile phones, cigarettes, a wallet and £370 cash.

The property had been broken into by Laura Woolston, 19, and Meakin, who knew the man’s pin number, who stole £500.

Woolston was arrested and told police she had wandered the streets, desperate for drugs, before smashing a glass panel in a rear door at the man’s address using a garden ornament.

Woolston, of Douglas Court, Derby Road, Heanor, and Meakin admitted theft. Woolston also admitted burglary and theft on May 28/29.

Magistrates decided their sentencing powers were insufficient and committed the pair to be dealt with by a judge at Derby Crown Court.
