Detective Inspector Graham Prince said: “I am pleased with the conviction and sentence today. The investigation revealed that Maling had inflicted serious injuries to Amy over a period of several years. Many of these assaults had gone unreported to police and were unknown to her family.

“By pleading not guilty Maling subjected Amy’s family to a full trial, where they had to listen to details of what happened to Amy and how she died. I must praise them for their courage during what must have been a terribly difficult time.

“Amy was a young woman with her life ahead of her. Sadly, Amy’s history is similar to many domestic abuse cases we come across where victims suffer in silence. They feel unable to come forward and are not known to the police.

“I want to reassure anyone who is suffering as a result of domestic abuse that they can speak to us. You will be supported and you will be believed. Please don’t suffer alone.”
