Man crashed through a hedge and into a car

A MAN who took his stepfather’s car fled after ploughing through a garden hedge into a parked vehicle.

Martyn White, 22, took the BMW without permission and drove it towards his home in Briar Close, Alfreton.

He lost control of it in Birchwood Road and crashed through a hedge into a car on a driveway.

“He tried to get the vehicle out of this predicament and was helped by a passer-by but the owner of the property, Robert Szabo, then came outside.

“The defendant didn’t leave his details and made off from the scene. He handed himself in at Alfreton police station some days later,” prosecutor Helen Griffiths told Chesterfield magistrates.

White, currently working as a chef in Scotland, admitted aggravated vehicle-taking, careless driving, failing to stop and report an accident and driving without insurance on December 9.

He had a previous conviction for assault. Sentence was adjourned until May 28 for probation reports. The court heard that the car he crashed into was declared an insurance write-off.

Defending John Wilford said White’s stepfather had been drinking heavily in a pub and White was worried he might drive home. “He decided to take the temptation to drive from him and drove the car himself. After the collision he left the scene in panic,” said Mr Wilford, saying the ban would make it difficult for White to get to work.
