Jobs could go at travel firm

Staff at the Midlands Co-operative travel agents in Heanor could face redundancy after company bosses announced its decision to shut the outlet.

The move comes as part of parent company Thomas Cook’s decision to axe more than 2.500 jobs from its network - and close nearly 200 high street stores in the wake of pre-tax losses of more than £485 million.

However Thomas Cook travel agents in Ripley and Alfreton will remain open.

The four employees at the Heanor outlet on Market Place will enter into negotiations over the next 90 days , a company spokesperson said.

He added that the staff could be offered roles elsewhere in the company.

Thomas Cook has blamed the loss on a “difficult trading environment” and higher fuel costs, and it has already closed 149 stores. The company’s chief executive for Europe and the UK Peter Fankhauser said: “It is never easy to make decisions that impact directly on our people, but we also owe it to our customers to shape the business effectively and ensure that, when they book their holiday with us, our administrative costs are as low as possible.”

Thomas Cook plans to close 195 of 1,069 stores and cut its workforce by 16 per cent.
