Japanese exchange visitors

Japanese students are staying in Derbyshire on an exchange visit which celebrates long-standing international links.

Next year will mark the 15th anniversary of Derbyshire County Council joining Derby City Council and South Derbyshire District Council to sign a formal twinning agreement with Toyota City in Japan.

Students from Derbyshire and Toyota City take part in an exchange programme each year to stay with local families.

This year students involved in the cultural exchange are from Aldercar Community Language College, the Ormiston Ilkeston Academy, Kirk Hallam Community School, and John Flamsteed Community School.

Twenty-seven Japenese students are currently visiting Derbyshire and were welcomed to the county council’s headquarters at County Hall, Matlock, by Chairman Councillor George Wharmby.

Councillor Wharmby said: “Youngsters from Derbyshire have a fantastic opportunity to learn about different cultures and traditions thanks to partnerships like the one we have with Toyota City.

“I was delighted to welcome our visitors to County Hall.

“These visits give everyone involved an insight into another way of life, help young people understand their place in the global community, and spark many long-lasting friendships.”

Chairman Cllr Wharmby welcomed Derbyshire students and their Japanese guests at County Hall last week.
