Horses escape on to the road in Derby Road, Marehay, April 12th, 2012.

MOTORISTS heading for work this morning had to stop after five horses escaped on to Derby Road in Marehay.

Traffic was forced to stop, including a bus, until they were herded back off the road by a passing woman motorist.

The horses had escaped at 7.30am, most through a gap at the side of the bus stop near the old Apollo engineering site.

A workman from the site, which is set to be used to build houses, also helped keep the horses off the road.

Most of the animals managed to squeeze back through a gap next to a nearby gate into fields. One returned to the field through a gap next to the bus stop, while the largest grey horse was led back to the field via the gap at the side of the bus stop by the woman motorist. Luckily she was used to handling horses and had a horse head collar in her car, which she used to get the animal safely back into the fields.

A small number of drivers, impatiently, did not stop as the woman led the last horse on to the road to be returned to the field.

Police were informed about the incident. It is not the first time horses have escaped on to the road in that area, the News reported on another incident there earlier in the year.
