Honour walk for soldier
Youngsters from the Ripley Detachment of the Derbyshire Army Cadet Force are to walk in memory of fallen soldier Thomas Wright on Friday.
Drummer Wright was killed serving the army in Afghanistan in 2007.
The Cadets will leave Mill ~Hill School in Ripley on Friday, at 9am for the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, flanked by the Ripley Riders.
The 24-mile walk is set to take the 30 cadets, aged between 12 and 17 years old, two days to complete and will help them attain their Duke of Edinburgh awards.
All funds raised will be donated to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and the cadets have so far raised just under £1500, with the help of several local businesses.
Chairman of the Ripley and District branch of the RBL Dean Fowler said the funds will be vital for the recently reformed branch.
He said: “We desperately need money so we can raise awareness for and support our current and ex-service personnel.”
To donate, contact the local cadet Commander at detachmentcommander@rocketmail.com or head to the virgin money giving page for the event: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/RipleyACF.
