Heanor school celebrates centenary
A service of celebration and thanksgiving will mark the centenary of the opening of a school on Mundy Street, Heanor, which took place on September 11, 1912.
At 11am on Tuesday, September 11, former students of Heanor Grammar School will gather at All Saints’ Church, Ilkeston Road, Marlpool.
The special service is being organised by former pupils. A similar service was held at All Saints’ in 1993 to mark the centenary of the opening of the original school in Heanor Hall back in 1893. The service will be followed by the Heanor Grammar School Old Students’ Association (or Old Heanorians) autumn reunion lunch at Morley Hayes. This is an invitation-only event for those on the association’s mailing list.
Although the school officially closed in 1974, the Old Heanorians still gather twice yearly for reunion lunches at Morley Hayes and there is still a mailing list of approximately 450 old students.
