Heanor Festival set to take place

The annual Heanor Festival is set to take place in the town, coinciding with the famous May Day event on the Market Place.

Heanor and Loscoe Town Council celebrates its 25th anniversary this year which makes the events planned for the town between May 2 and May 9 extra special.

There will be balloon modelling, traditional Maypole dancing and a variety of stalls on the Market Place on Bank Holiday Monday between 10am and 3pm.

That is just one part of a week of activities that also includes exhibitions and dance demonstrations from students at Heanor Gate Science College, mural painting by children at Mundy School and a film show at St Lawrence's Church on Tuesday, May 5, at 7pm.

A small team of organisers have been working hard on the event for the last six months, led by former chairman of Heanor Operatic Society David Rowley.

Mr Rowley said: "This opportunity came out of the blue and I like a challenge.

"We have a wonderful group of sixth form students from Heanor Gate Science College who are going to do an exhibition in the Heritage Centre, plus street dancing demonstration as well.

"We also have children from Mundy Junior School making a mural on the Market Place. I was very keen for them to be involved and for the public to see the positive side of youngsters in this area not just the negatives that sometimes surround children.

"I do hope the people of the town will come out, support the event and take part."

One of the highlights of the week promises to be a talk by Jim Sumner at the Arts and Heritage Centre on the Market Place on Wednesday, May 6, from 7pm. Jim has been a member of Shipley hall Cricket Club for 70 years and his humorous account of incidents, events and matches is not to be missed.

Funding for the event has come from Amber Valley Housing and festival funds.
