Holbrook Sports made three changes to the starting lineup for what proved to be a long-awaited first league win of the season.

With skipper Niall Mather suffering from an ankle injury, Marc Stones came in as centre half with Kane Jellyman shuffling over to right back and Mauro Giaracuni going to left back.

James Ozmen came in at centre midfield. Danny Graves returned in goal after recovering from a rib injury.

The first half was littered with errors with Holbrook being guilty of numerous misplaced passes. Greenwood were looking dangerous and quick on the break without troubling the Sports’ keeper.

On 30 minutes, the game was lit up by stand-in skipper Cory Bowler. A loose cross from Stephen Akers was picked up by James Ozmen and his square pass was exquisitely curled into the top corner by Bowler. An injury to Paul Fisher led to Rob Fretwell replacing him in attack.

Sports came out a little brighter and, ten minutes into the second half, saw them double their lead.

A neat passing move between Aaron Brady and Rob Fretwell saw them easily cut open the defence and when the keeper couldn’t hold Aaron Brady’s shot on goal, Rob Fretwell tapped home for his first goal for the club.

On 65 minutes, Fretwell got his second and Holbrook’s third, smashing home from the six-yard area after a scramble in the box.

With eight minutes to go, Greenwood got a consolation got but Holbrook saw out the game for deserved three points.

Assistant manager Vaughn Hallsworth said: “Finally to get the three points was very pleasing. We weren’t at our best but we got the result we deserved for a change.

“It was a scrappy game but our attitude has been great and we ground out the result. It was brilliant that Rob Fretwell finally got off the mark for the club and hopefully the goals will continue to flow for him.

“This should give us confidence going into the local derby match away to Borrowash Vics on Saturday. We have a couple of players returning to the squad this week so we will be looking to be at full strength again.”
