More than 200 mourners paid their respects to one of Heanor’s best known council figures at Bramcote Crematorium.

The former Amber Valley and Derbyshire county councillor, mayor of Heanor and deputy head teacher of Heanor Gate School, Bob Janes, passed away following an eight year battle with cancer.

Representatives of all the councils Cllr Janes worked for as well as former colleagues and students from Heanor Gate School, representatives of the local community, Labour Party colleagues, friends and family were among the many attending Bramcote Crematorium on Monday, January 6.

On behalf of the family Cllr Janes’ wife Jennifer, said: “We were really touched by the number of people who came and by their generosity to the charities that Robert wanted to support.”

Cllr Janes, originally from Bristol, held the seat for Heanor West from the 1990s and served as Mayor twice, in 2009 and 2012. He was a county councillor for the town for 12 years.

A collection on the day of the funeral in aid of Treetops Hospice, Risleyand the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity raised £800.

He was treated at the Royal Derby Hospital.

Leader of the Amber Valley Labour Group Cllr Paul Jones described his colleague as a ‘respected local personality.

He added: “He always wanted to serve the local community.”
