Ella’s taking on Tanzanian trek
A self-confessed climbing novice from Heanor is planning to take on one of the highest peaks in the world for a children’s charity.
Ella Mcmanus, who can usually be seen managing the stalls at Heanor Market Place, is bidding to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in August as part of a team of 20 Nottingham Trent University students.
The 32-year-old from Fletcher Street aims to raise more than £2,500 for the Child Reach International, which looks after disadvantaged children over the world.
She said: “This is going to be completely new to me - that’s the whole point I guess, I’ve never climbed anything in my life before.”
Ella and her cohorts will tackle the 19,341 ft peak and risk altitude sickness as part of the trek organised by the university.
But Ella, who needs to raise a minimum of £600 before April and plans to also take part in a skydive in the same month to help her fundraising cause, said she is not phased by nerves.
“I’ve heard about altitude sickness, that is a bit of a concern, I know of some people who have had to come back down again because they have been so poorly.”
While in Tanzania the trekkers will spend time Child Reach International outreach projects, where the organisation has helped provide clean drinking water and sanitised toilet conditions among other things. Ella said: “I think the organisation is so important to me - especially what they do for young women and girls.
