Disruption expected in Codnor as protestors arrive

Disruption will hit Codnor this weekend as hundreds of protestors turn up in opposition to the BNP's red, white and blue festival.

The festival will take place on land at Codnor Denby Lane from Friday until Sunday and police have advised that, as a result of the festival, a number of protestors are expected in the area on Saturday.

Amber Valley Borough Council has agreed to close the car park on Codnor Market Place whilst these protests are taking place.

Councillor Jack Brown, said "We want to make sure local residents are aware that there may be disruption to access in and around Codnor on the Saturday due to the number of protestors expected in the area.

"We are closing the public car park in Codnor Market Place on Saturday August 16 to enable the police to use it for operational purposes.

"In the interests of public safety we are also advising anyone planning to visit Codnor Recreation Ground that day to instead use the nearest alternative recreational facilities on Colin Avenue."

Police have invoked special public order laws in an effort to keep the number of anti-BNP prtestors who plan to come to the area on Saturday down to 700.

A number of shops in Codnor are expected to close over the weekend.

Once police estimate that 700 activists have turned up on Saturday, new arrivals will be asked to disperse and could be arrested if they refuse.

They will meet at 9am in Codnor Market Place and will be allowed to march from 11.45am. The A6007 Heanor Road will be closed.
