Discovery Days events at Cromford Wharf

A weekend of events will take place at Cromford Wharf on November 3 and 4.

It has been organised by the Friends of the Cromford Canal as part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site Discovery Days.

The wharf will come alive with miniature traction engines, model boats on the canal, the chance to try out canoeing on the canal or climbing the special mobile climbing wall courtesy of Focus Activities, all to the sound of the hand-turned street organ.

For younger children there are a host of special ‘Wild over Waterways’ activities to take part in including duck headdress and lace plate making, fishing games and even bridge building!

Inside the Gothic Warehouse there will be demonstrations of traditional narrowboat ‘Rose & Castle’ painting, fender making and peg weaving. There will be a slide show of historic photographs of the canal when it was still carrying coal, water colour paintings, tombola and the extensive sales stand of the Friends of the Cromford Canal, with Christmas Cards, books, maps, guides and clothing.

Each day there will be a guided walk along the canal (11am on Saturday, 1pm on pSunday) to High Peak Junction where the workshops will be open and Leawood Pump will be in steam.
