Diamond anniversary couple Jean and George Maskrey

Diamond anniversary couple Jean and George Maskrey

Somercotes couple Jean and George Maskrey were today celebrating 60 happy years of marriage together today.

The pair, from James Avenue, met at Matlock Fair in 1952 – and they said this week it was quite simply love at first sight.

They were married at Belper Register Office on april 24, 1954, and celebrated their
diamond wedding anniversary with
family meal last weekend.

Jean, 79, worked as a mill girl at Arkwright’s cotton mill
before taking several part-time jobs while bringing up her children.

Husband George, 84, worked as a lorry driver when he married, then as a chargehand at Ambergate Wire Mill.

Jean told us that the secret to a long and happy marriage was tolerance and patience. She said: “It’s all give and take with a marriage.

“We may have our differences from time to time but within a couple of hours they’re swept under the rug.

“That’s something you don’t see nowadays. Couples seem to split at the first sign of any trouble.”

The pair enjoy gardening together, while Jean is a fan of soap operas and George
enjoys word puzzles.

They have five children, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
