A Ripley couple who met while working together at a company that made men’s socks are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary today.
Peter Wilkins, 84, was born in Belper and Hilda, 80, nee Clarke, who was born in Ripley, met while they were both working at Flanders, on Days Lane, in Belper.
They were married on March 27, 1954, at Belper Registry Office. Their granddaughter Katy said: “In later years, Peter worked as a foreman at Adshead & Ratcliffe in Belper. Hilda continued to work for Flanders from home whilst looking after their two daughters, Lesley and Lorraine.”
Peter took early retirement and the couple enjoyed spending their time with their granddaughter Katy, who is now 24, and grandson Samuel, now 20. They now have a great granddaughter Gracie Nevaeh, only 22 months old, who completes the family.
The couple now live on William Holmes Court, in Ripley. Peter enjoys following Derby County Football Club and Hilda enjoys shopping and a coffee. They were regulars at Butterley Social Club to play bingo on Sunday evenings until it closed down.
When asked the secret to a long and happy marriage, Hilda said: “Talking through any problems and keeping the rest of the family close.”
