Detecting fake cash in town

Shopkeepers in Alfreton are being given a helping hand to spot fake bank notes by police and Amber Valley Borough Council.

Officers from the Alfreton Town Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team have visited stores in the town to deliver special counterfeit currency detector pens and offer advice following a number of incidents in February.

The pens, provided by the Amber Valley Community Safety Partnership, contain an ink that dries clear on genuine currency but shows a black or brown line on forgeries.

A number of training DVDs and CD-ROMs about spotting counterfeit currency, produced by the Bank of England, are also on offer to local retailers.

Three incidents took place on Thursday, February 7. At around 8am a man attempted to use fake bank notes to pay for fuel at Swanwick Services, Derby Road. At 2.30pm a woman used a counterfeit £20 note to pay for items in a shop on the High Street, South Normanton. Just after 4pm a man attempted to use counterfeit notes in Tesco in Alfreton and a petrol station on Chesterfield Road, Shirland.

Following enquiries, the man was found to have been given the note earlier in his change, and has since been reimbursed by the shop.

To get hold of the training DVD or CD-ROM contact Sgt. Dave Harrison on 01773 841652 or email communitysafety@ambervalley.gov.uk.
