A councillor who has campaigned for maintenance to an Ilkeston road has said widening would have been better than resurfacing.

Cllr Michelle Booth told the Advertiser that although resurfacing is way overdue on a stretch of Quarry Hill Road, widening the narrow carriageway would have been the better option.

She said: “I’m really glad that work to resurface the road is finally happening but I think widening the road would have been the best course of action.

“It’s a very busy stretch and can be quite dangerous.

“If there are two lorries travelling in either direction they have to wait at either end to let the other passs and cars are forced right up to the side of the road to let wider vehicles pass.

“When the Stanton development happens the road will only get busier.”

Drivers have been warned to expect delays as the roadworks begin.

Resurfacing of the Quarry Hill Road stretch south from its junction with Merlin Way, begins this weekend and the road will be closed with diversions in place for seven weekends.

In all, Derbyshire County Council workers are resurfacing half a mile of roads in the south of Ilkeston, Stanton and Stanton-by-Dale.

They will also be putting in new kerbs and repairing drains that have been badly damaged over recent cold winters and bad weather.

A county council spokesman said: “During the week there will be temporary traffic lights and there will be road closures at the weekends.”

Other roads affected include Ilkeston Road in Stanton-by-Dale.

Work was due to start on Monday but so far drivers using the road haven’t reported any delays.

Cllr Booth added: “I know that this is a very busy route and that the works will cause delays and disruption for motorists but I’ve been assured it will be worth it once the work is complete.”
