Dance school is set to be re-opened

A DANCE school run by a champion dance duo from Heanor is be reopened by their daughter ten years after it closed.

Dawn Jalbert's parents' Joan and Lewis Wilson were well known dancers and ran the Wilson School of Dancing in Langley for over 40 years.

Dawn decided to start the classes up again following a promise she made to her father who died of cancer last year. She said: "When my dad was really poorly he was telling the nurses in the hospital that I was going to take over the dance school. The nurses said to me 'you ought to do it.'

"I'm doing it in dad's memory and for mum, she's really pleased it's happening again."

The classes will be held at Heanor Miners Welfare and will include various dances from latin to salsa, such as the Waltz, Cha Cha Cha, Jive and Quick Step.

If the classes take off Dawn plans to hold a social dance to raise money for Heanor Memorial Hospital where her dad was treated. She said: "The nurses were brilliant – he'd be pleased about that. It would be great if we could do something for them."

Lewis and Joan Wilson taught hundreds of pupils to dance, including medalists and competitors in all areas of ballroom dancing. They also danced in competitions over the years and won many awards including the

prestigious Carl Alan award which was presented to them by Princess Margaret.

The couple also demonstrated at the same time and venue as Len Goodman of Strictly Come Dancing fame and were adjudicators on the original Come Dancing series. Dawn has also appeared on Come Dancing.

The dance classes will be held every Wednesday between 7.45pm and 9.15pm at Heanor Miners Welfare and began this week.

Dawn hopes to get her own premises for the dance school soon.
