Dan’s the man for Derbyshire

Dan Redfern

Dan Redfern

Head coach Karl Krikken says Dan Redfern can build on an impressive campaign after the 22-year-old became the latest homegrown cricketer to sign a new three-year contract with Derbyshire CCC.

The Academy graduate left-hander enjoyed his best season to date in 2012, notching the first two centuries of his career and averaging 37.71 in an ever-present campaign.

A consistent scorer of half-centuries since making his first-class debut at the age of 17 in 2007, Redfern ended the long wait for a ton in the opening match of the season as Derbyshire set the tone for a successful summer with victory over Northamptonshire.

A score of 133 followed versus Hampshire at the Rose Bowl and Redfern passed 50 eight times during the campaign, more than any other Derbyshire batsman in the first-class game.

An unbeaten 50 under extreme pressure in the crucial LV= County Championship victory over Kent earned the former England under 19s left-hander the Eddie Barlow Inspirational Performance Award at the Club’s recent awards evening.

He has clocked 62 first-class appearances for Derbyshire in total, scoring 2,961 runs at an average of 31.50.

Redfern, who was nominated for the inaugural LV= County Championship Breakthrough Player Award last summer, is following in the footsteps of teammates Tom Poynton and Ross Whiteley by attending the Darren Lehman Academy in Western Australia this winter.

Redfern said: “With homegrown cricketers gaining full backing to succeed alongside our valuable established players, it’s a very enjoyable environment in which to play cricket, so I’m delighted to commit to Derbyshire for three years.

“I’ve been pleased with my performances this season from a personal point of view and of course absolutely delighted with the success of the team.

“We’re right up for the challenge of First Division cricket next summer, as we are for the two limited-overs competitions also. We’ll go for it with no fear, with a great team spirit and with the same determination to be successful that served us so well in 2012.”

Head coach Karl Krikken said: “Dan has been demonstrating magnificent potential ever since his teenage years on the Academy and it was a pleasure to see that talent coming to fruition in 2012.

“The natural talent he possesses means Dan has all the attributes to really kick on after an impressive year in 2012 as he continues his first-class career with us for at least the next three years.”
