Dales nature-lovers sow seeds for the future

Green-fingered Dales residents are using flower power to replenish some of the area’s lost meadows.

Groups from Matlock, Darley Dale and Bakewell will be sowing seeds this weekend to launch the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) campaign Britain in Bloom.

The exercise is also a fitting start to National Gardening Week, which runs between April 16 and 22.

Between 1930 and 1980, 97 per cent of wildflower meadows were lost across England and Wales.

Pressures from agriculture and development, together with neglect, continue to impact on the remaining areas.

Sarah Raven, who presented Bees, Butterflies and Blooms on BBC TV, said: “We’re in the process of rediscovering our love for wildflowers so Wild about Wildflowers, is fantastic.

“Because we have destroyed so much of their natural habitat, it is crucial we restore as many flowers as possible.

“Our insects have evolved to feed from them and as we destroy more meadows, insect populations will continue to diminish and this is disastrous for the planet.”

People can take part in the event by visiting the RHS website www.rhs.org.uk/getinvolved.
