Cops kept busy over Christmas
FESTIVE cheer did little to halt crime over the festive period as police were called to separate arson and burglary incidents.
At 3am on Christmas Eve officers were called to a suspected arson at a stables block at a Somercotes farm.
There were no horses in the building on Lower Birchwood at the time, but a farmyard cat was injured and a guinea pig was killed.
Police are treating the incident as suspicious and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
On Christmas Day at around 9.15pm, burglars forced open a door at the Tesco superstore on Derby Road, Heanor.
Police say the criminals then broke into the supermarket’s cigarette kiosk and took cartons of cigarettes.
At the time of going to press it was not known how much had been taken as staff at the store were still checking stock levels.
If you have any information on either incident, contact Derbyshire Constabulary on 101, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
