New laws introduced this week against forced marriages have been welcomed by Derbyshire Police.

Forced marriage in England and Wales is now a crime under new legislation as part of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Stokes, head of public protection, said: “Forced marriage is often a form of domestic violence and can include physical and sexual violence, threatening behaviour and even imprisonment or abduction. The maximum sentence that forced marriage can carry is seven years imprisonment.”
