Community order for benefit cheat

An Underwood woman has been handed a 12 month community order after pleading guilty to a £7,000 benefit fraud.

Denise Easom, 35, of Alfreton Road, Underwood, entered a guilty plea to an offence under the Social Security Act 1992 of failing to give notification of a change in circumstances which would affected her entitlement to benefits.

She failed to tell Broxtowe Borough Council that she had moved out of the Broxtowe area but continued to receive housing benefit and council tax benefit to the sum of £7,096.20.

In mitigation Miss Easom’s solicitor stated that she had arranged a payment plan to pay back the money she had been over paid and that she was maintaining this arrangement.

He added that the offence did not involve dishonesty and that Miss Easom had no intention to defraud.

He also told the court that Miss Easom had difficult personal circumstances.

When sentencing the Magistrates took into account her early guilty plea, the Probation report and the fact that Miss Easom was attempting to repay the overpayment.

The Magistrates sentenced her to 12 months Community Order.

No order for costs was made at the hearing at Nottingham Magistrate’s Court on July 23 due to her financial circumstances.

The Magistrates’ advised Miss Easom that if she failed to comply with the Community Order, she would be brought back to Court and could face further sanctions.
