Prolific poppy seller Colin Picken has been awarded a special Ripley Town Council Certificate of Merit Award by the mayor Cllr Alwyn Bridge for years spent helping out with the Royal British Legion.

The Ambergate man, of Hawkins Drive, stepped down from his post as Poppy Appeal co-ordinator for the village last year due to ill health, having first taken on the role in 2006. A spokesperson for the town council said: “The Ripley town mayor presented Colin Picken with a special Certificate of Merit Award for the work he has done in the community and for the Royal British Legion over many years. Most people would know Colin from when he has stood in the Ripley library selling poppy wreaths and poppies for Remembrance Sunday and organising the collections raising huge funds for the legion.”
