More than 5,000 fake cigarettes were seized from a Ripley convenience store as part of a police crackdown on counterfeit tobacco.
The Just for You shop on Park Corner was one of two businesses searched in a sting on the morning of Tuesday, January 14.
The other store was on Victoria Street, Shirebrook.
Two people have been arrested, a 29-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man, after tobacco with a street value of £5,000 was removed in the raids conducted by Derbyshire police and Derbyshire County Council Trading Standards. Both are bailed pending further enquiries.
In total more than 7,000 cigarettes and 94 pouches of hand rolling tobacco were removed in the haul.
Det Sgt Mike Nicols of Derbyshire police, said: “We’re standing up for legitimate local traders whose businesses are being damaged by counterfeit and illicit tobacco and alcohol being sold at vastly reduced prices.”
Sniffer dogs were used in both raids and at the Ripley store, police say some of the banned products were hidden behind a wall panel covered by a mirror. Anyone with information about the sale of illegal tobacco should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or HM Revenue and Customs on 0800 595 000.
