Chinese restaurant gutted in blaze - crew still on scene

Waiting for Video...

FIREFIGHTERS are still on scene after a blaze gutted an Alfreton Chinese take away this morning.

Around 25 crew members have been tackling the fire which started in the upstairs of the China Town restaurant on King Street since 10.45am.

The A61 road to Chesterfield has been closed since around 11am while crews used a cherry picker and breathing apparatus to fight the blaze.

Crews are still damping the area down and smoke can still be seen coming from the building.

A civil engineer on scene has deemed the building structurally safe, but the crew is presently removing debris from the roof, which has almost entirely caved in.

Traffic is still being diverted along Hall Road, past the Tesco superstore, where long tailbacks have formed.

The cause of the blaze is as yet unknown, but rumours that the restaurant owners were caught inside the premises proved unfounded.

Further updates to follow.
