Elderly care home residents could be rehoused if plans to demolish a Heanor complex and build a new ‘super care centre’ in its place goes ahead.

Florence Shipley Care Home, near the Market Place has 26 older residents, all of who could be relocated to different homes if Derbyshire County Council can secure a £106.7million grant to build the super centres from the Government.

But Amber Valley Borough Councillor for Heanor West Paul Jones fears the move could affect the health of the individuals who currently live there.

He said: “The immediate concern is for the residents inside there and the programme the council are going to have for relocating them. There’s 26 beds there for frail and older people. These are people that rely on loved ones on a regular basis.

“The residents also get very used to these places and it is often very wrong to move these people as it can affect their health.”

Cllr Jones said the current site benefits from being in a good location and he is concerned residents would be scattered to places further away from families.

A county council spokesperson said: “This is not going to happen overnight. Everyone will have their options talked through with them and we hope to find alternative places they are happy with.

“Residents have already been consulted about the plans and a planning application has been formerly submitted.”

It could be the site of one of six new super centre care homes built in Derbyshire.

The county council had already looked at demolishing the Rowthorne Care Centre in Swanwick, but a spokesperson has said that the Florence Shipley Home was the preferred site.

The new care home could be up and running by 2015, although it was too early to estimate an exact timescale as the plans rely on the funding being granted, he said.

It would be built on the model of a home at Staveley in Chesterfield, the spokesperson added, with 32 beds alongside a number of other social facilities for the elderly such as a cafe and a salon.
