Residents on a Heanor street have said they were shocked to find out a house opposite a children’s play area was operating as a cannabis factory.

In March police raided the house on Park Street, finding more than 240 cannabis plants growing in three bedrooms and the loft – with a street value of more than £70,000.

Officers arrested three men at the scene – and this week Duc Huynh Le, 26, Quang Xuan Ho and Dat Thanh Nguyen,23, were handed 26-month prison sentences after pleading guilty to producing cannabis.

A fourth man, Thanh Trung Nguyen was given a 22-month sentence for admitting to the same offence.

Park Street resident Ginene Mason, 40, said she rarely saw anyone enter or leave the house. She said: “The curtains were always shut, but there were different people going in and out of it.

“The only time we found out what they were doing in there was when police vans turned up one day.”

Her husband David, 55, said: “It just goes to show you never know what’s going on in your own street doesn’t it?”

A close neighbour to the now overgrown house, which the cannabis growers were renting, said expensive cars were regularly parked outside. Children were occasionally seen playing in there, she said.

This week Christmas decorations still hang in an upstairs bedroom window of the three-bed property.

She said: “I have lived here for a year now and I kind of thought there might have been something going off in there.

“I always remember all the curtains being closed. There were never lights on.”
