Boys made to work at park to compensate for vandalism
Three teenagers from Amber Valley have been helping rangers at Shipley Country Park as recompense for damaging a shed in the area.
The three boys caused the damage last month and, as punishment for their behaviour, were made to go back to the park and work for a day alongside the rangers.
Inspector for the area Richard Smith, said: "The officer managing this incident spoke to all of the parties involved, including the children, their parents and the rangers to make sure that everyone was happy to use the restorative justice method in dealing with this crime.
"The young people who caused the damage were told that they would be subject to the normal prosecution if they failed to assist the rangers to a satisfactory level, or were rude or unhelpful.
He added: "The rangers were very pleased with the work of the teenagers and with the way in which this crime was resolved. We have also received positive feedback from the suspects' parents who were happy that their children were given an opportunity to make up for their wrongdoing without going through the criminal justice system."
The restorative justice project, introduced by Derbyshire Constabulary, has been running since the beginning of April, 2009, and thousands of cases across the county have been dealt with by this method.
Restorative justice means that a crime is dealt with in a way which achieves a positive outcome in accordance with the victims' wishes without the case going through the court process.
