Boozy bust-up ends with axe attack on Ambergate teacher

An Ambergate teacher was whacked with an axe handle during a bust-up with his boozy boyfriend, a court heard.

Peter Lynch told police that Paul Roberts (63) was an occasional binge-drinker and, on July 19, he returned home from work as a schoolteacher and saw his partner was the worse for drink. He told him to stop drinking and poured some alcohol down the sink. As he did so, the defendant picked up a 3ft-long wooden axe handle and threatened: “I’ll give you ten seconds to leave.”

Helen Griffiths, prosecuting, told Chesterfield magistrates: “He started to count but after reaching two he struck the left side of the complainant’s body with the handle.” Roberts, of Midland Terrace, Ambergate, admitted assault. He committed a similar offence against his partner seven years ago.

The bench imposed a six-week jail term suspended for six months, a six-month probation supervision order, with £85 costs.

“He is very remorseful and disgusted with himself,” said Stacey Whyte, for Roberts.
