a RIPLEY woman whose two-year-old daughter was born with clubfoot has organised a charity hockey match to say thanks to hospital staff.
Zoe Marriott, 28, still does not know if daughter Annie, who was also born with a rare disorder that affects the joints and muscles called arthrogryposis, will ever be able to walk – but she says the treatment at the Derby Royal has been fantastic.
Zoe said: “It was a shock to find out Zoe had clubfoot – but it is a surprisingly common condition. One in every 1,000 children are born with it every year.
“It was a bit hard to deal with at first, but the people at the hospital are so nice. If you need them you can always contact them.
“We don’t know if she will be able to walk or stand on her own – it’s just a waiting game at the moment.
“But she gets about using her walker – she makes sure of that!”
When she was born, Annie had to wear plaster casts for 11 weeks which were taken off every Tuesday so her feet could be repositioned. She also had an operation on her Achilles tendon.
She was forced to wear ‘bar and boots’ 23 hours a day for the next ten months in a bid to correct the condition and still wears them now when she goes to sleep.
One of the most common abnormalities at birth, clubfoot is a deformation in which the ankle is twisted, the foot points down and inwards and the soles of the feet face each other.
Annie, who has older brother Callum, 10, and younger sister Marley, 12 months, likes walking with her walker. Zoe said: “We’re waiting for her to grow so she can get a walking frame!
“Annie’s dad Ben can’t wait to play. The men are thinking of dressing up in silly costumes. We will be glad to raise anything.”
The mixed charity match takes place on Saturday, July 2, at Belper Hockey Ground, next to the football ground, and starts 11.30am.
Annie has been treated by the orthopaedic consultant surgeon Mr Rohan Rajan. who Zoe said had been absolutely fantastic in treating Annie.
