Angler stole scrap metal
A man entered a Ripley works compound and stole metal on his way home from his fishing trip, a court has heard.
Leighton Truby, 36, allegedly forced entry to the old Butterley works site on the night of July 10.
He loaded scrap metal into a vehicle and weighed it in for sale at Sims Metals in Somercotes the following day. But the car’s registration number was noted and he was arrested on July 12. “Theft of metal is prevalent at the present time,” Jon Cooper, prosecuting, told magistrates at Chesterfield.
Truby, of Market Place, Ironville, and formerly of Station Road, Langley Mill, admitted theft from VolkerLazer. He had previous convictions for burglary and theft. He was fined him £88 and ordered him to pay £86.24 compensation, with £85 costs.
“He had been fishing that night and, on his return in the early hours, his dog ran into the compound.
He climbed over a wall and followed the dog and saw a skip with scrap metal in it,”” said Emma Cornell, for Truby.
