Ambergate bridge to be demolished

A former railway bridge near Ambergate is being dismantled by Derbyshire County Council to help improve road safety.

The deck of the bridge, which spans the A610 at Sawmills, is being removed to prevent lorries striking it in the future.

Standing 4.19 metres high, the low bridge has already been struck by lorries on several occasions.

Work is due to take place on July 21 and 22. The road will be shut to all vehicles and pedestrians between Bullbridge Hill and New Road from midnight on Friday July 20 and is expected to reopen on Sunday morning.

During the road closure, traffic will be diverted via the A38 to the Little Eaton island and back along the A6, and A610 and vice versa.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place during the week leading up to the closure and the following week to allow preparatory and finishing works to take place. Lights will not be in place during morning and afternoon rush hours.

If weather conditions such as high winds prevent work from going ahead the closure will be postponed until the following weekend.

Councillor Simon Spencer, Derbyshire County Council’s Deputy Leader and cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Road safety is one of our top priorities and the bridge we’re demolishing has a long history of accidents with at least 20 reported over the past 20 years – some resulting in vehicles overturning.

“We hope motorists will bear with us while this important work takes place and apologise for any inconvenience which may be caused.”
