£83,000 benefit scammer snared

A suspended prison sentence hangs over a South Normanton woman who claimed over £83,000 worth of benefits she was not entitled to during a nine-year period.

Jean Necek, 53, of Field View, pleaded guilty at Nottingham Crown Court on May 2 to failing to declare she had been living with a full time employed partner from May 2003 while she claimed Housing and Council Tax Benefit and Income Support as a single person.

Judge Andrew Hamilton handed Necek an eight-month prison sentence suspended for two years, saying she had been thoroughly dishonest. He said she had known she was guilty and had been trying to get away with it for the last six years. It is Bolsover District Council’s largest ever case of benefit fraud.
