Alfreton couple John and Jean Palmer, who are celebrating 50 years of happy marriage, have revealed the secret of their marital success: surprises!

John, 74, and Jean, 68, were married at St Matthias’ Church Nottingham on February 1, 1964.

After 50 years of marriage the couple have a daughter Karen, sons Anthony and John, two grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Jean said: ”Everybody has their ups and downs but I can honestly say for us everything has been smooth over the years. It’s like magic. We never argue, we just keep on surprising each other.”

This year they celebrated their anniversary with a trip to Paignton and the Isle of Wight. John and Jean love nothing better than globe trotting.

John said: “When I worked on the taxis I would book us in for holidays at short notice and tell Jean at the last minute to pack her suitcase.”

On their 40th anniversary they travelled to their daughter Karen’s wedding in Mexcio, where they renewed their own wedding vows.
