£14m rebuild for Aldercar Community College

Aldercar Community Language College is being knocked down and rebuilt in a project set to cost between £12m amd £14m.

The headteacher at the college Tony Cooper has desperately wanted buildings at the school replaced since he started in the job 18 years ago, and said he is ‘absolutely delighted’ at the news.

“I’m absolutely delighted and all the staff are really pleased as well.

“There’s a real excitement that the new facilities are coming, which is just great,” he said.

“I have been working on this for nearly 18 years. I have pestering anybody who will listen to me about the state of these buildings.”

The school was built in 1955 and is of wooden construction.

The state of the buildings are now said to be the worse of all secondary schools in Derbyshire.

The whole college will be knocked down and rebuilt except the sixth form building which wsa new three years ago, the sports centre which was replaced last year and the languages block which was built in the 70s so will just be refurbished.

The building work will take part in two phases and the the first phase will more than likely incorporate the technology and art rooms and science labs, Mr Cooper said.

The second phase of work will incorporate the humanities, maths and drama rooms, the main hall and dining room.

The design work will cost about £2m, the first phase £6m and the second phase about £5m.

Building work is due to start around this time next year.
