A DEPARTMENT store turned into a grandstand for the day to raise money for the Ripley Hospital League of Friends.

Clarke’s of Ripley celebrated ladies’ day at Ascot on Thursday by holding an in-store charity betting event.

A group of 27 ladies paid a £12 ticket fee and packed into the cafe at the store wearing suitable Ascot attire. Betting shop Ladbrookes, allowed Clarke’s to place £25 worth of free bets and then donate the winnings to the League of Friends. Despite just the one horse coming in at 11-8 in the Gold Cup, the event raised £270.

Owner of the store David Clarke, 49, said: “We went to Ascot on a staff trip in 2009 and we were inspired, It’s been a really fun day.”
