Heanor Gate Science College has been graded as ‘inadequate’ since it became an academy and will be put into special measures, Government inspectors say.

The school, which became an academy in November 2011, was rated as ‘outstanding’ when inspected two years ago.

The Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted) inspectors said the achievement of pupils, the quality of teaching and the school’s leadership and management were all ‘inadequate’ while the behaviour and safety of the pupils was said to ‘require improvement’.

The report said: “Since becoming an academy the college has declined. Achievement is inadequate because many students do not make the progress they should, particularly in English.”
