CHILDREN having to spend time in hospital are set to benefit from money raised at this year’s Derby Hospitals Charity Jingle Jog fun run on Sunday, December 4.
Funds from this year’s Jingle Jog will go towards new play equipment, soft play flooring, a special sun canopy, seating and LED lighting in the outside play area on the Puffin Ward at Derby’s Children’s Hospital. This revamped area will be known as the ‘Sunshine Deck’ and will help ensure that children who use the area can have lots of fun while their parents can sit in comfort collecting their thoughts and keeping an eye on their child. Local company East Midlands Demolition are also raising funds for the project.
Frances Watson, senior play team specialist at the Children’s Hospital, said: “Even the children who are unable to walk will be able to come outside and sit under the canopy.
“Improving the outside play area will make such a difference to all of our young patients and their families. The area caters for all children from neonates to teenagers and also gives the parents somewhere to sit and watch the children play or have physiotherapy.”
To take part in the Jingle Jog costs just £6 for adults and participants will receive a free Santa suit to run in and keep. The event is at Markeaton Park and starts with a warm up at 10.30am, followed by the children’s half-mile fun run and the 5km Jingle Jog. Under 14s go free.
Kerry Brady, events and community fundraiser at Derby Hospitals Charity, said: “Last year people taking part in the Jingle Jog raised a tremendous amount of money for specialist seating used by our elderly patients and long term patients. This year we would like to make the Jingle Jog the biggest and best ever – so join us for a fun festive morning.
“You don’t have to run; you can walk, so encourage your friends to join you as this event is suitable for all – including the dog!”
People taking part are encouraged to raise sponsorship for the event, which can either go towards the ‘Sunshine Deck’ project or to any ward or department at Derby Hospitals.
