A Ripley couple’s prize back yard has their competitors green with envy- after they scooped a national gardening competition.
Doreen Wood and David Hawkins have gradually transformed an unruly wasteland into a floral oasis a their Manvers Street home over the past 17 years. And this week retired canteen manager Doreen, 68, was awarded the ‘most inspirational gardener award in the Daily Mirror’s Diarmuid Gavin Cup. Celebrity gardener and judge Diarmuid described the home as a ‘personal paradise’. Thrilled Doreen said: “I couldn’t believe it, we had totally forgotten we had entered. Me and my granddaughter were running around saying ‘we’ve won the cup!’”
