a SOUTH Wingfield couple have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a charitable donation.
Helena and John Jennings raised £475 for the eye clinic at the Royal Derby Hospital when they asked family and friends to make donations instead of presents at their party.
Helena, 70, met John, 74, at a village dance in the Parish Rooms and they were married at All Saints’ church on April 3, 50 years ago. They have three children Andrea, 48, Julie, 46, and Ian, 40, and four grandchildren – Rachel, 22, Sara and Christopher, both 19, and James 13.
Helena worked at the county offices in Derby and Matlock, whilst John was a long-distance lorry driver and a slaughterman in a Swanwick abbatoir. The pair both enjoy gardening and dancing and say ‘give and take’ is the secret to a long and happy marriage. They plan to celebrate with a holiday in Scotland.
