Ripley marathon runner Steve Saunders began his first Jog Derbyshire Group this week.
Meeting at 10am every Thursday outside Ripley Leisure Centre, the group will take in the surrounding landscape on a series of runs.
And 59-year-old Steve, from Oxford Street, has competed in 40-mile ultra marathons across the country, but says the class is open to all levels of ability.
The first class went on a two-mile course, mixing jogging and running.
Classes will increase in intensity as the ability of group members increases.
As well as being a good way of staying fit, Steve said a jogging club is a great way of experiencing the surrounding countryside with spring on the way.
He said: “Once it dries up there are some really good off-road routes around here.
“It’s much easier than trying to start on your own,” added Steve, “You have got other people to run with and pace yourself with as well.
“Everyone is self-conscious when they first start jogging but when you are in a group that doesn’t matter.”
