A Heanor funeral director has been honoured with a special award - which has been presented only 25 times in the last 100 years.
Barry Hutsby is a partner of the Eastwood Funeral Partnership, and runs the branch in Heanor.
He becomes just the 26th person to be rewarded with honorary membership of the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) since the organisation was founded in 1905.
Barry, 67, was born and brought up in Loscoe and now lives in Eastwood. He said: “I feel incredibly honoured to have received this award and knowing that members of my own profession have chosen to present me with it fills me with pride.
“During the last 40 years the funeral industry has changed greatly, from the increased regulation, the rise in the number of cremations, the creation of natural burial sites, the vast array of coffins and these days we go to great lengths to accommodate a wide range of special requests, as funerals become more of a celebration of life.
“I am thrilled that my service to this evolving industry has been acknowledged and also that my commitment to the national association, which I have always found to be a source of help and support, has been rewarded too.”
The chief executive of the NAFD, Alan Slater, said: “Barry Hutsby has given absolutely exceptional service to the funeral profession and he is highly respected by his peers, hence the decision to honour him with this accolade.
“The NAFD represents more than 80 per cent of funeral homes in the UK and relies heavily on volunteer labour.
“Barry has been, and still is, an active member of the association and has served at every level of the NAFD with distinction.
“This is the highest accolade the NAFD has and as such we give it out very rarely and only in cases of exceptional service. I am delighted to say that Barry Hutsby was a very worthy recipient.”
The Eastwood Funeral Partnership is an independent, family business with four funeral homes; Eastwood and District Funeral Service at Nottingham Road, Eastwood, Gillotts Funeral Service, in Abbott Street, Heanor and Derby Road, Stapleford and Kimberley Funeral Service in Main Street, Kimberley.
Barry received the award from NAFD president Steve Pearce.
