THE 50th birthday of a very special locomotive has been celebrated by rail enthusiasts at The Midland Railway – Butterley.
Alan Calladine, the Midland Railway Trust development officer said: “45-133 was built in Derby Locomotive Works in 1961 and was originally allocated to Bristol, before later moving to Totton, only ten miles from Butterley.
“It was finally withdrawn from service in May 1987, and was bought for preservation in 1990.
“At 138 tons and over 35 feet long these machines are certainly very impressive and this example has given good service over its 50 years.”
The engine was put on display alongside the main line steam locomotive “Princess Elizabeth”.
